Follicular Unit Extraction
Follicular units are generally the groups of 1-4 terminal hairs. Therefore we call the follicular unit as the natural anatomic body of the hair.
Follicular unit extraction method helps the surgeon to transplant the maximum amount of hair can be taken in the most efficient way from the donor area without losing grafts - of course if the surgeon and the team is highly experienced.
In this technique, there are very small holes created in the donor area while extracting the follicles which heal easily and quickly. Also it helps to extract large number of grafts from the donor area safely at one session.
As the follicles are extracted very carefully and one by one; this guarantees the natural cosmetic result of the transplant.
Micrografts - Minigrafts
In contrast to follicular units, micrografts (1-2 hairs), and mini-grafts (3-6 hairs), are small grafts cut randomly from donor area, not specifically as individual intact follicular units.
As these multiple units contain extra skin around them, they demand larger recipient sites than in FUE, which causes more wound tissue at the recipient area. This also limits the number of grafts that can safely be transplanted in one session.
FUE or Micrografting ?
It is difficult to find pros and cons of 2 techniques as they all have limited units inside however FUE is a more specialized technique requiring higher attention and expertize of the surgeon and staff and can result with a guaranteed natural hair with no scar left after healing.
Dr. Turker Ozyigit has been trained in this surgical technique both in theory and practice in live surgeries and using his skills of long-years
experience in microsurgery as being an aesthetic, plastic, reconstructive surgeon.
He has been performing FUT and FUE Hair transplantation since the beginning of the year 2000 as being one of the pioneer plastic surgeons in this field in Turkey.
FUE Hair transplantation technique can also be used for other parts of the body including eyebrows and eyelashes.
It has also become much more viable as an alternative for female pattern hair loss which is usually more diffuse.
How about the recovery period?
There will be small scars (approximately 0.7-1.0 mm in diameter) on the site from which the follicles were taken.
These scars should go away in 7-10 days.
After the operation, approximately 25% of patients develop some swelling on the upper part of the head and around the nose, but they go down within 3-4 days.
These complications aside, you can carry on with your normal life following this operation.
The important thing to remember is that everyone has only one donor area and the hair follicles taken from this area must be used carefully and effectively.
When can the operation be performed?
Hair transplantation can be performed at any time after the age of 20. Individual outcomes may vary depending on several factors which your doctor will review with you in an individualized consultation.
Partial hair loss at an early age must be considered very carefully. Areas of high priority and areas of lesser priority should be determined during the consultation. The area of skin with the hair loss must also be examined carefully.
You may have to change or stop taking certain medications prior to undergoing a hair transplant.
The Hair Transplant Procedure
Hair loss is another problem that plagues people of both sexes.
Data shows that hair loss affects 50% of men and 30% of women by the time they reach their 50s. It affects 80% of men and 60% of women by the age of 70.
Women are a bit luckier when it comes to this problem, since there are ways they can use to style their hair that allow them to conceal hair loss more effectively, but this is not the case for men.
With Follicular Unit Extraction, hair follicles at the back of the head between two ears which aren’t genetically prone to shed are taken out one by one, and then planted into the hairless area with the aim of healthy hair growth.
Hairs on the sides and the back of the head are not affected by male pattern baldness. As a result a hair transplant surgeon can remove donor hair follicles from the sides and back and relocate them on the top of the scalp where hair loss has occurred and the newly transplanted hair will grow exactly as it was from the donor area.
For whom is this right decision?
Anyone with permanent hair loss is a candidate for hair transplantation.
Men that have male pattern baldness
Women with female pattern baldness
Anyone who wants to redesign or correct his or her hairline
People who experienced local hair loss after physical injury, trauma, or vestigial skin disease
Also suitable for people who want thicker eyebrows, eyelashes, or beards.
Ultra-refined grafting method is the best decision for people their appearance in business life speaks one step ahead (like speakers, top managers, etc)
How long does hair transplantation take?
The standard FUE hair transplantation takes approximately 6-8 hours on average and sometimes upto 12 hours for mega-sessions.
For cases of extreme hair loss, multiple sessions may be required. The gap between sessions can range from 6-8 months.
Ultra-refined grafting method has a different schedule for the transplantation as follows for a 3000-grafts surgery;
According to this plan, 3 nights stay in Istanbul is required for a 3000-grafts FUE in ultra-refined technique whereas with standard FUE for 4500-grafts, 2 nights stay is fairly enough for the whole process.
